<noinclude>{{manversion|6.0.0.17|dialog|Settings:Edit}}__NOTOC__</noinclude>

===={{field|Settings:Edit|Basics}}====

The {{field|Settings:Edit|Tab Size}} specifies the size of each ''tab stop''. These tab stops determine, how much a Tab character shifts following text. Note: Tab characters unlike spaces are variable-length characters. They use pre-calculated tab stops to determine length of each Tab instance.

The {{field|Settings:Edit|Left Margin}} specifies the size of the ''left selection margin''. The selection margin is a space between the text of the document and left border of the main window. Here users can drag mouse cursor to select entire lines quickly. Set {{field|Settings:Edit|Left Margin}} to zero to hide the selection margin completely.

===={{field|Settings:Edit|Options}}====

The {{field|Settings:Edit|Disable smart Home key}} disables smart behavior of the {{hotkey|Home}} key. Smart behavior includes jumping between line's indentation and its beginning, or wrapped line beginning and unwrapped line beginning. See chapter [[Hotkeys]] for more details.

The {{field|Settings:Edit|Disable Overwrite mode}} disables the
{{feature|Overwrite mode}} altogether and prevents invoking it accidentaly.

The {{field|Settings:Edit|Bold Caret in Overwrite mode}} visualy enlarges the caret while in {{feature|Overwrite mode}}. If disabled, {{feature|Overwrite mode}} can be still be determined from indicator in the {{feature|Status Bar}}.

The {{field|Settings:Edit|Suppress multi-level Undo/Redo}} disables multi-level {{feature|Undo}}/{{feature|Redo}} altogether and imitates the old Windows Notepad's Undo command. Note: Windows Notepad's single-level Undo is always available thru {{feature|Simple Undo}} hotkey {{hotkey|Alt+BkSpace}}, even if multi-level {{feature|Undo}}/{{feature|Redo}} is enabled. Therefore, it may be more convenient to keep the multi-level
{{feature|Undo}}/{{feature|Redo}} enabled and use {{feature|Simple Undo}} hotkey {{hotkey|Alt+BkSpace}} to get the old Windows Notepad's behaviour.

The {{field|Settings:Edit|Reduce Undo/Redo upon Save}} tells to reduce the multi-level {{feature|Undo}}/{{feature|Redo}} queues to a single
{{feature|Undo}} step. The {{feature|Redo}} queue is emptied completely, the {{feature|Undo}} queue is allowed to retain one (the last) step.

Note: By default, all {{feature|Undo}} steps are kept for the duration of a document, i.e. until another document is loaded or the current document is at least re-loaded. This might have severe influence on available memory after too many modifications to the document (e.g. if one keeps some document opened for days and makes lots of modifications daily, the {{feature|Undo}} queue can become quite big and superfluous, assuming no-one wants to {{feature|Undo}} entire days of work anyway).

Note: {{feature|Revert}} is a handy command to get rid of {{feature|Undo}} queue besides {{field|Settings:Edit|Reduce Undo/Redo upon Save}} setting.

The {{field|Settings:Edit|Allow inserting control characters}} allows users to insert special control characters (several ASCII characters below 32) into the document. Inserting these characters is by default forbidden in order to prevent inexperienced users to add these characters thru unassigned hotkeys.

===={{field|Settings:Edit|Mouse multi-clicks gradually select}}:===

The {{field|Settings:Edit|Mouse multi-clicks gradually select}} set of options allow the specify, which text entities are to be selectable as whole pieces by mouse multi-clicks. Note: A multi-click is a double-click, triple-click or quadruple-click.

Each further click advances to the next type of text entity (naturally, only those checked in this list count) in the following list. After multi-clicking, hold down the mouse button and drag thru text to select it by whole text pieces according to currently chosen text entity.

* The {{field|Settings:Edit|Mouse multi-clicks gradually select: Word}} enables multi-click selecting by entire {{defined|words}}.

* The {{field|Settings:Edit|Mouse multi-clicks gradually select: Wrapped line part}} enables multi-click selecting by visual lines. Unlike entire unwrapped {{defined|lines}}, visual lines are what the user can visually determine as lines of text after applying {{feature|word wrapping}}.

* The {{field|Settings:Edit|Mouse multi-clicks gradually select: Whole line}} enables multi-click selecting by entire unwrapped {{defined|lines}}.

* The {{field|Settings:Edit|Mouse multi-clicks gradually select: Paragraph}} enables multi-click selecting by entire {{defined|paragraphs}}.

* The {{field|Settings:Edit|Mouse multi-clicks gradually select: Entire document}} enables multi-click selecting the entire document.

Example: Selecting thru double-click selects by entire words, if
{{field|Settings:Edit|Mouse multi-clicks gradually select: Word}} is checked; triple-click selects by entire lines if {{field|Settings:Edit|Mouse multi-clicks gradually select: Wrapped line part}} is not checked and {{field|Settings:Edit|Mouse multi-clicks gradually select: Whole line}} is checked; and quadruple-click selects entire paragraphs if
{{field|Settings:Edit|Mouse multi-clicks gradually select: Paragraph}} is checked. If {{field|Settings:Edit|Mouse multi-clicks gradually select: Wrapped line part}} is enabled triple-click selects wrapped line parts and entire lines can be selected by quadruple-click; etc.

===={{field|Settings:Edit|Complete Word}}====

The {{field|Settings:Edit|Complete Word: Ignore case}} tells to
{{defined|ignore case}} upon populating the {{dialog|Complete Word}} dialog in {{feature|Complete Word}}. See {{feature|Complete Word}} for further details.

The {{field|Settings:Edit|Complete Word: Longest auto-completion}} enables the longest auto-completion in {{feature|Complete Word}}. See {{feature|Complete Word}} for further details.

The {{field|Settings:Edit|Complete Word: Sort suggestions}} sorts suggestions in the {{dialog|Complete Word}} dialog in {{feature|Complete Word}}. See {{feature|Complete Word}} for further details.

===={{field|Settings:Edit|Indentation}}====

The {{field|Settings:Edit|Auto-indent text}} specifies, whether auto-indent mode is to be used. If turned on, each time a new line is started (using {{hotkey|Enter}} key), {{feature|Smart Return}} (hotkey {{hotkey|Ctrl+Enter}}) is used instead. Note: {{feature|Smart Return}} starts a new line as usual, but also copies indentation from the previous line to the new line. See {{feature|Smart Return}} for further details.

The {{field|Settings:Edit|Tab key indents multiple lines}} allows the user to use {{hotkey|Tab}} key to {{feature|Indent}} multiple lines instead of replacing them by a Tab character. If turned off, {{hotkey|Tab}} key simply inserts one Tab character (or Spaces, if {{field|Settings:Edit|Insert Spaces instead of Tab}} is turned on), replacing anything selected. This is the same as if any other character was inserted, e.g. a letter. On the other hand, if turned on, instead of replacing, {{feature|Indent}} is invoked if multiple lines are selected and {{hotkey|Tab}} key is hit. Note: If single line or line part is selected (i.e. the selection does not contain any
{{defined|newline}}), it gets replaced even if {{field|Settings:Edit|Tab key indents multiple lines}} is turned on.

The {{field|Settings:Edit|Insert Spaces instead of Tab}} specifies whether to use Tab character when {{hotkey|Tab}} key is pressed, or rather to use Spaces instead. Note: The number of Spaces inserted depends on the position on line and on the {{field|Settings:Edit|Tab Size}} setting.

Note: While using fixed-width font, the resulting visual blank space of inserted Spaces should be the same, as if a Tab character was inserted. This, however, does not always work with proportional fonts. In proportional fonts, size of a Space character often differ from font's base character width, from which tab stops are calculated. Therefore, there might be difference between real Tab size and accumulated size of Spaces inserted instead of a Tab. This option is however primarily meant for fixed-width fonts, and thus any potential difference while using proportional font is not considered wrong.

===={{field|Settings:Edit|Keep caret from borders}}====

The {{field|Settings:Edit|Keep caret from borders: Top/bottom}} ensures there is always some space between the caret and window borders. Scrolling is used early to keep this visual space, allowing the user to always see what is below or above the caret.

The {{field|Settings:Edit|Keep caret from borders: Left/right}} ensures there is always some space between the caret and window borders. Scrolling is used early to keep this visual space, allowing the user to always see what is before or after the caret.

<noinclude>{{manversion|6.0.0.17|feature}}__NOTOC__</noinclude>
{{#headline:Sort tools|Sort.. (Alt+Ctrl+S)}}

Sorts {{defined|lines}} of the selection according to the given sorting keys.

Upto five sorting keys can be used, each sorting key represented by its own tab in the {{dialog|Sort Lines}} dialog: {{field|Sort Lines|First}}, {{field|Sort Lines|Second}}, {{field|Sort Lines|Third}}, {{field|Sort Lines|Then}}, and {{field|Sort Lines|Finally}}. Sorting keys are used subsequently ony by one, i.e. if two lines are considered equal acording to the {{field|Sort Lines|First}} key, then the {{field|Sort Lines|Second}} key is used, etc. In other words, to have the {{field|Sort Lines|Finally}} key harnessed/employed, all four preceeding sorting keys must yield indecisive comparison.

Note: Each sorting key offer a special {{field|Cutting line portion|Nothing}} option, which turns off the entire key. Such key is not used for comparing lines upon sorting, but it does not prevent later sorting keys from being queried. Using {{field|Cutting line portion|Nothing}} option has the same effect as setting up a sorting key, which would always yield indecisive comparison.

Note: Sorting keys are used only to compare and sort the lines, e.g. to decide, which one goes first and which one will be the second one. The lines themselves are not being modified, only their order.

=====Cutting line portion=====

Each sorting key may cut portions from {{defined|lines}}, which are to be used for comparison upon sorting. {{:Cutting line portion}}

=====Direction and format=====

The meaning of each sorting key is specified by {{field|Sort Lines|Sort as}} options.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Text}} option tells that each portion of line previously cut is to be treated as a simple string of characters upon comparison — comparison of two strings of characters is done {{defined|lexicographically}}, i.e. by subsequently comparing each pair of corresponding characters from both strings (the first pair of different characters is the one that decides which string is greater).
** Note: {{defined|Character case}} can be ignored upon {{defined|lexicographical}} comparison, as well as entire characters and character types. See below.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Numbers}} option tells that each portion of line previously cut is to be treated as a {{defined|number}} upon comparison — comparison of two numbers is done by their natural order.
** A {{defined|number}} may, in general, consist of a sign, numerals, decimal point and more numerals. Any of those may be omitted, e.g. {{string|3.14}}, {{string|+2.0}}, {{string|2.}}, {{string|-7}}, {{string|.3}} are all valid numbers. Total count of digits in a {{defined|number}} is not limited. Note: Individual separate decimal point ({{string|.}}) or solitary positive/negative sign character ({{string|+}} or {{string|-}}) with no numerals following, as well as ''empty'' number (empty string), are all treated as zero.
** Note: System locale settings (Regional settings) are used while comparing numbers. This includes localization of decimal point, positive and negative signs, thousands separator, etc.
** Note: All alpha-numeric characters are considered valid numerals, thus hexadecimal numbers (or any other system with radix up to 36) are supported. All numbers must share the same radix, however.
** Note: All {{defined|white-spaces}} are automatically ignored upon comparing {{defined|numbers}}, and {{defined|character case}} is ignored as well.
** Note: The first unrecognized and non-ignored character after a recognizable {{defined|number}} terminates that {{defined|number}}. Any following text is ignored. Note, however, that all alpha-numeric characters are considered valid numerals and {{defined|white-spaces}} are ignored, thus mystifying {{string|3 pigs}} is a valid number, which is bigger than {{string|3 cows}}, but is far far less than {{string|1 elephant}}. This is because both {{string|3pigs}} and {{string|3cows}} have only 5 digits while {{string|1elephant}} has 9 digits. It is the same as if comparing numbers {{string|37198}}, {{string|32048}} and {{string|131375429}}. Tricky, isn't it?
** See chapter [[Appendix]] for further details and examples of recognized {{defined|number formats}}.

Each sorting key can specify the resulting order of sorted lines using the {{field|Sort Lines|Direction}} with two intuitive options: {{field|Sort Lines|Ascending}} or {{field|Sort Lines|Descending}}.

=====Options=====

Additional options are available to further modify, which characters are compared and which are ignored upon comparison.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore case}} option can be used to compare lines in {{defined|case insensitive}} manner. This option is implicit upon {{field|Sort Lines|Sort as}} {{field|Sort Lines|Numbers}}.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore white-spaces}} option can be used to ignore all {{defined|white-spaces}} upon comparison. This option is implicit upon {{field|Sort Lines|Sort as}} {{field|Sort Lines|Numbers}}.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore punctuation}} option can be used to ignore all {{defined|punctuation characters}} upon comparison. System locale settings and system unicode tables are used to identify {{defined|punctuation characters}}.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore blank characters}} option can be used to ignore all {{defined|blank characters}} upon comparison. System unicode tables are used to identify {{defined|blank characters}} — invisible spacing characters.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore control characters}} option can be used to ignore all {{defined|control characters}} upon comparison. System unicode tables are used to identify {{defined|control characters}} — non-printable characters with special meaning.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore all but alpha-numeric characters}} option can be used to ignore all but {{defined|alpha-numeric characters}} upon comparison. System unicode tables are used to identify {{defined|alpha-numeric characters}}, which include letters and symbols from many different languages.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore characters}} option can be used to manually specify individual characters to be ignored upon comparison. Note that characters from this option are always {{defined|case sensitive}}.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore all but}} option can be used to manually specify individual characters to be accepted upon comparison, while ignoring any other characters. Note that characters from this option are always {{defined|case sensitive}}.

If a character is to be ignored upon comparison, it is as if all occurrences of such character were deleted before the comparison. Note, however, that the characters are never physically removed from the lines — the resulting lines are not modified by this tool.

Note: Set of characters to be actually ignored upon comparison is a union of all ignored characters as specified by the options above. Note that even if {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore all but}} option specifies some character, {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore characters}} option can take it off the table.

===={{field|Settings:General|Application}}====

The {{field|Settings:General|Exit by Esc key}} allows the {{hotkey|Esc}} and {{hotkey|Shift+Esc}} hotkeys to exit the application. Note that open dialogs are closed by {{hotkey|Esc}} as well, and all dialogs are closed before the application itself is closed by {{hotkey|Esc}} hotkey. This includes the {{feature|Search Bar}}.

The {{field|Settings:General|Ask upon such exit}} is available only if {{field|Settings:General|Exit by Esc key}} is turned on, and ensures that the user is asked about the closing before actually closing the application.

The {{field|Settings:General|Full path in Caption}} displays full document path (including drive letter and directory path) and file name (including file extension) in the main window title and on the Taskbar icon. If turned off, displays a ''file title'', which usually does not include path and may also exclude file extension. Note: What components ''file title'' actually contains can be modified thru {{system|Windows Explorer Options}} dialog; e.g. by default, file extension is hidden on most Windows Installations, but can be turned on by advanced users.

===={{field|Settings:General|Status}}====

The {{field|Settings:General|No ASCII in Status Bar}} disables panel of {{feature|Status Bar}} where current character's code is displayed. See {{feature|Status Bar}} for more details.

The {{field|Settings:General|No save through Status Bar}} disables invoking the {{feature|Save}} command thru double-clicking on the respective panel of the {{feature|Status Bar}}. By default, double-clicking on panel with unsaved modifications indicator conveniently invokes {{feature|Save}} or
{{feature|Save As}} commands.

===={{field|Settings:General|Words}}====

The {{field|Settings:General|Basic word definition (alphanums only)}} disables full unicode character recognition when determining words, and uses a bit simpler ''alphanum'' character class (letters, letters with diacritics and numbers) for {{defined|word}} definition.

This {{defined|word}} definition is used when working with {{defined|words}}, e.g. in {{feature|Select Word}} or {{feature|Complete Word}}.

The {{field|Settings:General|Include underscores in words}} adds underscore character to the {{defined|word}} definition. Underscores (by default) are not part of {{defined|words}} and are treated as {{defined|word delimiters}}.

Note: Other characters, those that are not included within {{defined|words}} are divided into two groups: {{defined|white-spaces}} and {{defined|word delimiters}}. All word-oriented features (e.g. {{feature|Select Word}}) usually treat all {{defined|white-spaces}} as one delimiting character. So, for example, {{feature|Select Word}} selects either one {{defined|word}} or all consecutive {{defined|white-spaces}} or a single {{defined|word delimiter}} otherwise.

===={{field|Settings:General|.LOG feature}}====

The {{field|Settings:General|Add date first, then time}} tells, whether to use {{feature|Date/Time}} or {{feature|Time/Date}} upon creating new log with the {{feature|.LOG extension}}.

===={{field|Settings:General|Recent Files}}====

The {{field|Settings:General|Empty Recent Files menu}} button empties the list of the {{feature|Recent Files}}.

Davidroper: /* Basic installation with the Installer */

<noinclude>{{manversion|5.4.1.1}}__NOTOC__</noinclude>

There are several ways, how to get TED Notepad ready for use:
* First, you may use an Installer. It will install TED Notepad onto a computer, create some shortcuts in the start menu and optionally add some additional Filters. An installation as a default notepad replacement may be chosen, but also may turn out unsuccessful. See below.
* Second, you may install TED Notepad from a ZIP package by yourself, without use and help of any wizards and/or automated dialogs. This is usually the most preferred way when installing as a portable application.
* Third, you may run TED Notepad with no installation procedures at all. Just unpack from the ZIP package and run.

All three types are described further below.

=== Basic installation with the Installer ===

Follow these steps to install TED Notepad using a NullSoft System Installer.

1. Download the Installer file of your choice and run it.

: Note: Please, be careful to choose an appropriate installation file according to your system. You will have to choose between Windows 95/98/Me and Windows NT/2000/XP versions. The version for Windows NT/2000/XP will not run on Windows 95/98/Me. On the other hand, the version for Windows Windows 95/98/Me is unable to fully support all Unicode characters.

: Note: You may also choose between [[RichEdit clone|LE]] and [[RichEdit clone|RE]] clones. The [[RichEdit clone|LE]] clone is the default one and is recommended. Please, see chapter [[RichEdit clone]] for more details about the available [[RichEdit clone|RE]] clone before installing.

2. Follow steps displayed by the Installer.

: You will be able to choose, whether to install TED Notepad as a ''notepad replacement'' and as a ''standalone application''. Additionally, you may choose to setup some basic Filters and External viewers as well. Finally, you may add a portable INI file to your installation.

: Installing as a ''standalone application'' will install TED Notepad into a specified directory, including the manual and all other files. This installation is the default installation type for a text editor.

: Installing as a ''notepad replacement'' will try to install TED Notepad as your default Notepad application. This choice may be considered as a violation by your System. Please, see '''File protection troubles''' below.

: The meaning and use of a ''portable INI file'' is described in chapter [[Portable INI file]].

If you come to a problem during the installation, read all notes above and below, and also review the on-line manual for any further changes. You can find the most recent version of the on-line manual at [http://jsimlo.sk/notepad/manual/ http://jsimlo.sk/notepad/manual/].

If you find no answer to your problem, feel free to contact me directly through a form at [http://jsimlo.sk/notepad/ http://jsimlo.sk/notepad/]. In such case, please, try to describe your problem as clearly as possible. Also note, that these pages are translated automatically by Google. I do not understand German, Dutch or Portuguese... Really! I have already got several messages in Portuguese. I have not understood a single word.

Note, that this is a manual of TED Notepad version {{appver}}. If you are trying to install an older or newer version and have found no answer here, please refer to an appropriate manual version. You can find all reliable versions at [http://jsimlo.sk/notepad/manual/ http://jsimlo.sk/notepad/manual/].

=== ZIP packages ===

These zip packages, downloadable on the same page as the Installers, contain all the files you will need for a hand-held installation and/or for a direct, i.e. with no installation at all.

To run TED Notepad without any installation, just unzip the content of a package to a directory of your own choice and run the {{system|TedNPad.exe}}. Keep the documentation file {{system|TedNPad.htm}} in the same directory as the executable application. Otherwise the manual will not be accessible from the application.

To install TED Notpead, unzip the content of a chosen ZIP package into a desired directory. Then, it may be worthwile to add the chosen directory to the {{system|PATH}} enviroment variable (e.g. by modifying the {{system|autoexec.bat}} or System variables).

When installing as a default ''notepad replacement'' this way, the desired locations are {{system|%WINDIR%}} and {{system|%SYSDIR%}}. Usually these locations are directories like {{system|C:\WINDOWS}}, {{system|C:\WINNT}}, {{system|C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM}}, {{system|C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32}} and {{system|C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32}}. It depends on the System type and version you use (ie. Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP).

{{example_start}}To see what the desired locations may be, type this into the command prompt:
{{example_body}}<nowiki>echo %WINDIR%
echo %SYSDIR%</nowiki>
{{example_end}}

=== Windows 95/98/Me notes ===

Please, be sure, you have downloaded a correct version, designed for Windows 95/98/Me. These older versions of windows may not be able to work with applications designed directly for Windows NT/2000/XP.

=== Windows NT/2000/XP notes ===

Please, be sure to have Administrator rights when installing TED Notepad into Program Files directory.
Without Administrator rights, you may only be able to run it directly with no installation.
See '''ZIP packages''' above.

The system may reject TED Notepad as a ''notepad replacement''. See '''File protection troubles''' below.

=== How to modify file associations? ===

Find a file with an extension that you want to assign to TED Notepad. E.g. A {{string|*.txt}} file.

To modify the file associations, right-click on the file and choose {{system|Open with...}} and then {{system|Choose program...}} from the menu. A list of applications should appear. Select TED Notepad from the list. If TED Notepad is not listed there, click on {{system|Other...}} button to add TED Notepad to the list manually. Finally, choose {{system|Always use this program...}} and click the Ok button. The System should renew the file associations.

Note: This method is not available on some older versions of Windows. On these versions, you will have to try a second one described below.

Another method to modify the file association is to open Windows Explorer and click on the {{system|Folder Options}} menu item, located within {{system|View}} or {{system|Tools}} menu. A dialog opens with a page named {{system|File types}} where the file associations can be fully managed.

=== File protection troubles ===

On several versions of Windows (especially on Windows 2000/XP) you may come across the problem of a file protection while installing TED Notepad as a ''notepad replacement''. Even after a successful installation, TED Notepad may be overwritten back by the original Windows Notepad. This is because your System is trying to ''protect'' you and your data by ''protecting'' its basic set of applications.

Whatever tricks could be done to bypass this file protection may be considered as a violation by your System. It will try to resist the tricks and restore the original Windows Notepad application at all costs. Below come several descriptions of how to do such tricks, however this manual does not encourages you to do so. Proceed on your own risks.

==== All occurences ====

One such trick is to replace all occurrences of {{system|notepad.exe}} on your computer at once quickly (I said quickly!). Be sure to handle all these locations: {{system|%WINDIR%}}, {{system|%SYSDIR%}} and and {{system|%SYSDIR%\dllcache}}. You may need to write a script or a batch file to do so quickly enough. Windows will then start complaining about an unrecognized version of a {{system|notepad.exe}} and will ask for an installation CD. You can choose to ingore the warning and keep the unrecognized version.

Note, that if you use the Windows Installation CD/DVD in the future, TED Notepad may be (and probably will be) replaced by the original Windows Notepad. Keep-up the fight or just give up.

==== File protection list ====

Another trick is to add notepad.exe to a list of unprotected files. In order to do that:

* Run command prompt, i.e. click the Start menu -> Run and type {{system|cmd}} there.
* In the command prompt type {{system|cd %WINDIR%\system32\Restore}} to change the directory.
* Then type {{system|attrib -S -H -R filelist.xml}} to clear hidden, system and read-only flags.
* Then type {{system|notepad filelist.xml}} to edit the file and add the highlighted lines into the {{system|Exclude}} section:
{{example start}}
{{example body}}<nowiki> <Exclude>
<REC>%windir%\system.ini</REC>
<REC>%windir%\tasks\desktop.ini</REC>
<REC>%windir%\win.ini</REC>
</nowiki>{{example_select|<nowiki>    <REC>%windir%\notepad.exe</REC>
<REC>%windir%\system32\notepad.exe</REC></nowiki>}}<nowiki>
<REC>*:\AUTOEXEC.BAT</REC>
<REC>*:\CONFIG.MSI</REC>
<REC>*:\CONFIG.SYS</REC>
</Exclude></nowiki>
{{example end}}
* Save the file and exit Notepad.
* Back in the command prompt, type {{system|attrib +S +H +R filelist.xml}} to restore the flags.
* Install TED Notepad as a ''notepad replacement''.

All of them on hotkeys; all designed for quicker and advanced editing. The light-weight portable application fits on USB drive and loads instantly with no installation required. TED Notepad is designed especially for daily writing of notes, lists, scripts and html/php files.
===Briefing===

Because TED Notepad supports only very basic formatting, you cannot accidentally save special formatting in documents, that needs to remain pure-text. This is especially useful when creating html/php Web pages, because no special characters nor formatting may appear in an html/php Web page source code.
* Plenty of hotkeys and some extra clipboards;
* Several kinds of word and phrase completions;
* All unicode characters and bi-directional support;
* Unicode, UTF-8, Unix and Mac file types;
* Line indentation, unindentation, closing and tabifying;
* Column cutting and numbers adding;
* HTML/XML Tags inserting;
* Reversing of text, lines and words;
* Full-scale line sorting;
* Searching for line duplicates;
* Word wrapping committing and unwrapping;
* File inclusion and exclusion;
* and Filters Architecture for any user-defined plugins.

===Development===

TED Notepad was designed to replace the popular Windows Notepad in every way. Besides that, it has been covered by a variety of text tools, functions, features, clipboards and hotkeys. Optimized to the highest performance; while keeping the intuitive conservative user interface. It was developed and improved with the know-how I gained during all the studies. And as my personal hobby, it is completely free. If you want to show your support, please, consider a donation to this project or just tell your friends. The more people like it, the more motivation there is to improve TED.

The application was developed at the Labs of Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the Charles University in Prague; written in pure ANSI C language (no MFC, no C++, no Borland), using the system API functions, compiled with Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0. In contrast to other Notepad replacements, the development priority of TED Notepad was to create as stable and as fast as possible program. Without wizards, objects and toolbars; but with help and support of the other students there; I think it is now becoming what it ought to be.

===Future===

Although not versatile enough, the MS Windows Notepad was indeed my daily text editor since forever. That's how I have started this project. To extend its possibilities. Just a little bit. Well, by now, TED Notepad is far beyond every initial hope. But still, I am sure you can find a lot of good ideas about how to enhance the Notepad and cherish the fame of a monkey application.

On the other hand, version for Windows Windows 95/98/Me is unable to fully support all Unicode characters.

This is the default installation type for a text editor.

: Installing as a ''notepad replacement'' will try to install TED Notepad as your default Notepad application. This may be considered as a violation by your System. Please, see '''File protection troubles''' below.

: The meaning and use of a ''portable INI file'' is described in chapter [[Portable INI file]].

If you come to a problem during the installation, read all notes above and below and also review the on-line manual for any further changes.

=== ZIP packages ===

{{example_end}}

=== Windows 95/98/Me notes ===

Please, be sure, you have downloaded a correct version, designed for Windows 95/98/Me. These older versions of windows may not be able to work with applications designed directly for Windows NT/2000/XP.

=== Windows NT/2000/XP notes ===

=== File protection troubles ===

==== All occurences ====

==== File protection list ====

* Then type {{system|attrib -S -H -R filelist.xml}} to clear hidden, system and read-only flags.
* Then type {{system|notepad filelist.xml}} to edit the file and add the highlighted lines into the {{system|Exclude}} section:
{{example start}}
{{example body}}<nowiki> <Exclude>
<REC>%windir%\system.ini</REC>
<REC>%windir%\tasks\desktop.ini</REC>
<REC>%windir%\win.ini</REC>
</nowiki>{{example_select|<nowiki>    <REC>%windir%\notepad.exe</REC>
<REC>%windir%\system32\notepad.exe</REC></nowiki>}}<nowiki>
<REC>*:\AUTOEXEC.BAT</REC>
<REC>*:\CONFIG.MSI</REC>
<REC>*:\CONFIG.SYS</REC>
</Exclude></nowiki>
{{example end}}
* Save the file and exit Notepad.
* Back in the command prompt, type {{system|attrib +S +H +R filelist.xml}} to restore the flags.
* Install TED Notepad as a ''notepad replacement''.
