Shows or hides the {{feature|Wrap Margin}}, which is a thin vertical line, indicating soft {{feature|word wrapping}} width. If both {{feature|Word Wrap}} and {{feature|Wrap Margin}} are turned on, all lines in the document are wrapped to fit within this margin. If {{feature|Wrap Margin}} is turned off while {{feature|Word Wrap}} is turned on, lines in the document are wrapped to fit within window width.

Note: {{feature|Wrap Margin}} can stay turned on even while {{feature|Word Wrap}} is turned off. In such case, the {{feature|Wrap Margin}} does not wrap lines on its own, but rather gives a visual guideline for line lengths and manual line wrapping.

Position of the {{feature|Wrap Margin}} can be easily adjusted by clicking on the margin line and dragging it.

Note: The visual position of the {{feature|Wrap Margin}} changes (along with text of the document) upon horizontal scrolling, therefore, it always denotes the same absolute horizontal position within the text.

If turned on, every line of the document is wrapped to fit either the visual width of the editor window, or the {{feature|Wrap Margin}}, if {{feature|Wrap Margin}} is enabled as well. Wrapping lines of text enables user to see all text on any line, but it does not affect the way such text appears when it is printed or saved to a file.

Note: If a single word is too long to fit within {{feature|Wrap Margin}}, it is not broken just yet, but is allowed to continue even beyond the {{feature|Wrap Margin}}. However, if the word is also too long to fit within the width of the editor window, then it is broken into several lines as necessary. In other words, {{feature|Wrap Margin}} is a somewhat soft wrapping guide, whereas editor window width is a hard wrapping point.

Note: Numbers in the {{feature|Line Numbers}} gutter and within the {{feature|Status Bar}} are always irrespective of actual {{feature|word wrapping}}.

Note: If window width or {{feature|Wrap Margin}} changes, actual {{feature|word wrapping}} adjusts itself automatically.

How about a plugin architecture? Something simple - just a list of menu names and programs to run and maybe an indication of whether it should prompt for additional parameters. TED will run the program with those parameters and with current selection and then accept the output back into the TED workspace. (--- anonymous user ---)

====Managing filters====

Filters can be added thru the {{dialog|Settings}} dialog. See chapter [[Filters page]] of the {{dialog|Settings}} dialog for details on adding, modifying and managing filters.

====Filter commands====

Each {{feature|Text Filters|filter}} must be defined as a runnable command, consisting of an application file to execute and its parameters. System commands can be executed as well, but only through a {{system|command interpreter}}, i.e. {{system|cmd.exe}}, {{system|command.com}} or {{system|launch.exe}}, as described below.

Each {{feature|Text Filters|filter}} can be supplemented with upto 9 user ''variables'' within its command, using batch variable syntax, i.e. {{syntax|Text Filters|%1}}, {{syntax|Text Filters|%2}}, ..., {{syntax|Text Filters|%9}}. Upon invoking such {{feature|Text Filters|filter}}, {{dialog|Filter}} dialog appears, asking for values for required variables.

Besides user variables, internal variables are available:
* {{syntax|Text Filters|%F}} variable can be used to insert path and file name of the current document.
* {{syntax|Text Filters|%S}} variable can be used to insert current selection into the command.
* {{todo|more internal variables?}}

All command variables can be auto-enclosed with "double-quotes" by adding an ''escaping flag'' to them. Escaping flag is one of following:
* Tilde (~) — Encloses the variable with double-quotes, and doubles all double-quotes in the variable. This is more common for native Windows commandline applications. E.g. Variable {{string|%~1}} expands to {{string|"Use ""double-quotes"" in parameters"}}, if {{syntax|Text Filters|%1}} contains phrase {{string|Use "double-quotes" in parameters}}.
* Back-slash (\) — Encloses the variable with double-quotes, and escapes all double-quotes in the variable with back-slashes. This is more common for unix and linux commandline applications. E.g. Variable {{string|%~1}} expands to {{string|"Use \"double-quotes\" in parameters"}}, if {{syntax|Text Filters|%1}} contains phrase {{string|Use "double-quotes" in parameters}}.

Note: Unescaped variable, e.g. {{syntax|Text Filters|%S}}, does not add any extra characters to the command. This can be useful and sometimes even necessary, but it can also become unreliable, if spaces and other special characters are expected in such variable. Consider escaping variables, if spaces are expected to be given upon using a filter.

{{example start}}Example:
{{example body}}<nowiki>myapp.exe %1

myapp.exe /a %1 /b /c %2

myviewer.exe %~F

grep.exe -e %\S</nowiki>
{{example end}}

====Filter options====

{{todo|Options}}

Nothing is written into the {{feature|Text Filters|filter}}'s {{system|stdin}}.

No output is gathered from {{feature|Text Filters|filter}}'s {{system|stdout}}.

{{tip}} Variable {{string|%F}}, along with {{field|Text Filters|Push input}} and {{field|Text Filters|Capture output}} options turned off, can be useful to define an external viewer which does not read the {{system|stdin}} at all, but requires a file name to start on.

====Technical details====

Upon {{feature|Text Filters|filter}} being executed, a new process is started using the {{feature|Text Filters|filter}}'s command, after replacing all variables with given user values from the {{dialog|Filter}} dialog. Current selection is written into the {{system|stdin}}1 of the started process, and its {{system|stdout}}2 and {{system|stderr}}3 are read. Depending on what value the process returns, current selection is replaced with the output of the process, or an error message is displayed, containing returned error code and contents of the {{system|stderr}}3.

If the {{syntax|Text Filters|%F}} variable is used, the document is saved automatically before the execution of the filter and the {{syntax|Text Filters|%F}} is then replaced by the actual path and file name of the current document.

: <sup>1</sup> {{system|standard console input}}
: <sup>2</sup> {{system|standard console output}}
: <sup>3</sup> {{system|standard console error output}}

=====Filter requirements=====

An application defined in {{feature|filter}}'s command should read the {{system|stdin}} for input text and should output any results to the {{system|stdout}}. If the operation is successful, the application should return zero. Otherwise it should return non-zero value and optionally describe the error to the {{system|stderr}}.

Note: Some languages (like Pascal) does not support {{system|stderr}} at all. Therefore, if a non-zero return code is received and {{system|stderr}} is empty, {{system|stdout}} is expected to contain the error description.

If an application file name ends with an {{string|.exe}} extension, it is not necessary to use it in the command, but it may be necessary otherwise. The command can specify the full path and file name of the application to execute as well as only the file name. In the case of a missing path, system uses the current working directory and system directories upon searching for the application.

System commands need to be executed through a {{system|command interpreter}}, as they do not have any file names to be executed. Use standard {{system|command interpreters}} (i.e. {{system|cmd.exe}} on Win NT/2000/XP, {{system|command.com}} on Win 9x/ME) or the {{system|launch.exe}} interpreter, which is included in the installation package and installed with TED Notepad.

{{example start}}Examples:
{{example body}}<nowiki>cmd.exe /c command [parameters]
cmd /c dir /b %1

command.com /c command [parameters]
command.com /c dir /b %1

launch.exe command [parameters]
launch dir /b %1</nowiki>
{{example end}}

=====How to create a filter's application?=====

Very easy! Any programming language that can be compiled to a console application (i.e. PE files with an .exe extension) may be used, e.g. C/C++, Pascal, Visual Basic, etc. Even scripting languages are supported by using their associated interpreter for execution, e.g. PHP, Python, Perl, etc.

Such application should use its {{system|stdin}} for input, its {{system|stdout}} for output and its {{system|stderr}} in the case of failure/error. It should return zero upon success and non-zero value upon failure. No other requirements/restrictions are necessary. Applications can execute their own sub-processes, and even show user dialogs if necessary.

Note: Some languages do not define {{system|stderr}}. Therefore, all error messages can also be written to {{system|stdout}}. If a non-zero error code is returned and no {{system|stderr}} is started, {{system|stdout}} is read instead of {{system|stderr}} for any error messages to be displayed to the user.

Note: Actually, both {{system|stdout}} and {{system|stderr}} are displayed to the user upon a non-zero error code. This behaviour may change in the future, according to the suggestions of the end users. The {{system|stderr}} is and will be preffered. {{todo|really?}}

{{example start}}Example:
{{example body}}<nowiki>
#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>

int main (int argc, char* argv[])
{
int lines;
char buff[1024];

if (argc < 2) {
fprintf (stderr, "Enter the number!"); // outputs to stderr
return 1;                                 // ...failure!
}

lines = atoi (argv[1]);                     // gets 1st parameter and
// converts it to integer
if (lines < 1) {
fprintf (stderr, "Wrong number!"); // outputs to stderr
return 2;                                 // ...failure!
}

Kew:

{{#headline:Sort tools|Sort.. (Alt+Ctrl+S)}}

Sorts {{defined|lines}} of the selection according to the given sorting keys.

Upto five sorting keys can be used, each sorting key represented by its own tab in the {{dialog|Sort Lines}} dialog: {{field|Sort Lines|First}}, {{field|Sort Lines|Second}}, {{field|Sort Lines|Third}}, {{field|Sort Lines|Then}}, and {{field|Sort Lines|Finally}}. Sorting keys are used subsequently ony by one, i.e. if two lines are considered equal acording to the {{field|Sort Lines|First}} key, then the {{field|Sort Lines|Second}} key is used, etc. In other words, to have the {{field|Sort Lines|Finally}} key harnessed/employed, all four preceeding sorting keys must yield indecisive comparison.

Note: Each sorting key offer a special {{field|Cutting line portion|Nothing}} option, which turns off the entire key. Such key is not used for comparing lines upon sorting, but it does not prevent later sorting keys from being queried. Using {{field|Cutting line portion|Nothing}} option has the same effect as setting up a sorting key, which would always yield indecisive comparison.

Note: Sorting keys are used only to compare and sort the lines, e.g. to decide, which one goes first and which one will be the second one. The lines themselves are not being modified, only their order.

=====Cutting line portion=====

Each sorting key may cut a portion of a line, which is used for comparison upon sorting. {{:Cutting line portion}}

=====Direction and format=====

The meaning of each sorting key is specified by {{field|Sort Lines|Sort as}} options.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Text}} option tells that each portion of line previously cut is to be treated as a simple string of characters upon comparison — comparison of two strings of characters is done {{defined|lexicographically}}, i.e. by subsequently comparing each pair of corresponding characters from both strings (the first pair of different characters is the one that decides which string is greater).
** Note: {{defined|Character case}} can be ignored upon {{defined|lexicographical}} comparison, as well as entire characters and character types. See below.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Numbers}} option tells that each portion of line previously cut is to be treated as a {{defined|number}} upon comparison — comparison of two numbers is done by their natural order.
** A {{defined|number}} may, in general, consist of a sign, numerals, decimal point and more numerals. Any of those may be omitted, e.g. {{string|3.14}}, {{string|+2.0}}, {{string|2.}}, {{string|-7}}, {{string|.3}} are all valid numbers. Total count of digits in a {{defined|number}} is not limited. Note that individual separate decimal point or positive/negative sign character with no numerals, as well as ''empty'' number, are all treated as 0.
** Note: System locale settings (Regional settings) are used while comparing numbers. This includes decimal point, positive and negative signs, thousands separator, etc.
** Note: All alpha-numeric characters are considered valid numerals, thus hexadecimal numbers (or any other system with radix upto 36) are supported. All numbers must share the same radix, however.
** Note: All {{defined|white-spaces}} are automatically ignored upon comparing {{defined|numbers}}. {{defined|Character case}} is ignored as well.
** Note: The first unrecognized and non-ignored character after a recognizable {{defined|number}} terminates that {{defined|number}}. Any following text is ignored. Note, however, that all alpha-numeric characters are considered valid numerals and {{defined|white-spaces}} are ignored, thus mystifying {{string|3 pigs}} is a valid number, which is bigger than {{string|3 cows}}, but is far far less than {{string|1 elephant}}. This is because both {{string|3pigs}} and {{string|3cows}} have only 5 digits while {{string|1elephant}} has 9 digits. It is the same as if comparing numbers {{string|37198}}, {{string|32048}} and {{string|131375429}}.
** See chapter [[Appendix]] for further details and examples of recognized {{defined|number formats}}.

Each sorting key can specify the resulting order of sorted lines using the {{field|Sort Lines|Direction}} with two intuitive options: {{field|Sort Lines|Ascending}} or {{field|Sort Lines|Descending}}.

===== options=====

Additional options are available to further modify, which characters are compared and which are ignored upon comparison.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore case}} option can be used to compare lines in {{defined|case insensitive}} manner. This option is implicit upon {{field|Sort Lines|Sort as}} {{field|Sort Lines|Numbers}}.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore white-spaces}} option can be used to ignore all {{defined|white-spaces}} upon comparison. This option is implicit upon {{field|Sort Lines|Sort as}} {{field|Sort Lines|Numbers}}.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore punctuation}} option can be used to ignore all {{defined|punctuation characters}} upon comparison. System locale settings and system unicode tables are used to identify {{defined|punctuation characters}}.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore blank characters}} option can be used to ignore all {{defined|blank characters}} upon comparison. System unicode tables are used to identify {{defined|blank characters}} — invisible spacing characters.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore control characters}} option can be used to ignore all {{defined|control characters}} upon comparison. System unicode tables are used to identify {{defined|control characters}} — non-printable characters with special meaning.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore all but alpha-numeric characters}} option can be used to ignore all but {{defined|alpha-numeric characters}} upon comparison. System unicode tables are used to identify {{defined|alpha-numeric characters}}, which include letters and symbols from many different languages.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore characters}} option can be used to manually specify individual characters to be ignored upon comparison. Note that characters from this option are always {{defined|case sensitive}}.
* {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore all but}} option can be used to manually specify individual characters to be accepted upon comparison, while ignoring any other characters. Note that characters from this option are always {{defined|case sensitive}}.

If a character is to be ignored upon comparison, it is as if all occurrences of such character were deleted before the comparison. Note, however, that the characters are never physically removed from the lines — the resulting lines are not modified by this tool.

Note: Set of characters to be actually ignored upon comparison is a union of all ignored characters as specified by the options above. Note that even if {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore all but}} option specifies some character, {{field|Sort Lines|Ignore characters}} option can take it off the table.

Asks for a tag {{field|XML/HTML Tag|Name}} and for its {{field|XML/HTML Tag|Attributes}}. Then encloses the selection with a specified XML/HTML tag (including the attributes if given). The tag may be {{field|XML/HTML Tag|Empty}} which means that only the starting tag is generated with a slash at its end according to XML specification (e.g. <nowiki>
</nowiki>). In this case, if a selection is found, the tag is placed at the end of such selection.

If the selection does not contain newline, it is enclosed tightly. However, if the selection does contain newlines, it is enclosed with additional newlines after the starting and before the closing tag.

The selection always persists the operation, but it excludes the generated starting and closing tags, thus selecting the same text as before.
{{#headline:Text tools|Translate Characters.. (Alt+Ctrl+T)}}

Asks for {{field|Translate Characters|Find}} and {{field|Translate Characters|Translate to}} character maps. Then translates the characters in the selection by replacing all occurrences of each character from {{field|Translate Characters|Find}} with corresponding character from {{field|Translate Characters|Translate to}}.

Note that {{field|Translate Characters|Find}} and {{field|Translate Characters|Translate to}} represent ''lists'' of characters rather than entire phrases. By assigning the first character from {{field|Translate Characters|Find}} to the first character from {{field|Translate Characters|Translate to}}, the second character from {{field|Translate Characters|Find}} to the second character from {{field|Translate Characters|Translate to}}, etc., the tool creates a so called ''character translation map'' (similar to one used by Boy Scouts for substitution cipher encryption). With this ''translation map'', individual characters of the selection are then substituted for other characters (as Boy Scouts are encrypting a secret message).

If {{field|Translate Characters|Translate to}} is shorter than {{field|Translate Characters|Find}}, extra characters from {{field|Translate Characters|Find}} are translated to ''nothing'', effectively deleting them from the results.

If {{field|Translate Characters|Translate to}} is longer than {{field|Translate Characters|Find}}, extra characters from {{field|Translate Characters|Translate to}} are simply ignored.

Optionally, {{field|Translate Characters|Delete all other characters}} option can be used to delete all characters, which are not specified in the {{field|Translate Characters|Find}}. Note: Even if {{field|Translate Characters|Delete all other characters}} is turned on, the translation of characters still requires that every character from {{field|Translate Characters|Find}} has a corresponding character in {{field|Translate Characters|Translate to}}. If {{field|Translate Characters|Translate to}} is shorter than {{field|Translate Characters|Find}}, extra characters from {{field|Translate Characters|Find}} are again translated to ''nothing'', deleting them from the results as well.

Optionally, {{field|Translate Characters|Escapes & ranges}} option can be used to turn on recognition of character ranges within {{field|Translate Characters|Find}} and {{field|Translate Characters|Translate to}}. Character ranges allow to easily specify entire sets of characters, e.g. {{string|a-z}} or {{string|0-9}}. Note however, that using ranges has a few limitations/caveats. {{todo|Escapes & ranges specifics}}

Note: Characters not specified in {{field|Translate Characters|Find}} are not modified, unless {{field|Translate Characters|Delete all other characters}} option is turned on.

Note: This tool is always {{defined|case sensitive}}. You need to specify translation for both {{defined|lower case}} and {{defined|upper case}} characters, if {{defined|case insensitiveness}} is expected.

{{example_start}}Example:
{{example_body}}{{example_select|TED Notepad for Windows}}

<noinclude>{{manversion|6.0.0.17|feature}}__NOTOC__</noinclude>
{{#headline:Text tools|Extended Replace.. (Alt+Ctrl+R)}}

Searches for all occurrences of a specified {{field|Extended Replace|Find what}} phrase within the selection and replaces them with {{field|Extended Replace|Replace with}} phrase.

By default, the search is {{defined|case insensitive}}. {{field|Extended Replace|Match case}} option can be used to make the search {{defined|case sensitive}}.

{{field|Extended Replace|Whole words}} option can be used to restrict the search to only those matches, which start and end at word boundaries. Note that a match itself might contain {{defined|non-word characters}}, since only the boundaries of the match are probed. Therefore, the last character before the match and the first character after the match may not be {{defined|word characters}}; while the first character and the last character of the match must be {{defined|word characters}}.

{{field|Extended Replace|RegExps}} option can be used to turn the {{feature|Regular expressions}} engine on. When {{feature|Regular expressions}} are enabled, {{field|Extended Replace|Find what}} is parsed as a ''regular expression pattern''. See chapter [[Regular expressions]] for more details on supported regular expressions syntax.

Note: Invalid or faulty patterns result in tool refusing to work until the pattern is corrected.

{{field|Extended Replace|Mimic case}} option can be used to {{defined|mimic character case}} of matches upon replacing. This option individually converts {{defined|character case}} of the replacement string upon each match. The conversion is done upon actual replacing (i.e. after the replacement string is prepared for the match) and the conversion takes only {{defined|character case}} of the match into account. Therefore, the {{defined|mimic case}} may result in different {{defined|character case}} for each match. If the tool cannot decide how to {{defined|mimic case}} of a match, it leaves the replacement intact, giving the user a chance to specify one special {{defined|mixed case}} replacement.

{{tip}} The {{defined|mimic case}} option recognizes only ''basic'' types of {{defined|character case}}, i.e. {{defined|lower case}}, {{defined|upper case}}, {{defined|word capitals}}, {{defined|first capitals}}. Everyting else is considered {{defined|mixed case}} and the tool does not try to convert case of the replacement. This can be utilized to specify ''one'' {{defined|mixed case}} version of the replacement. Consider you need to replace {{string|OneHalf}} with {{string|SlovakBomber}}, but want to use the {{defined|mimic case}} to automatically replace {{string|onehalf}} with {{string|slovakbomber}} and {{string|ONEHALF}} with {{string|SLOVAKBOMBER}}. Using {{defined|mixed case}} {{string|SlovakBomber}} as a replacement will do the trick.

{{button|Extended Replace|Escape \}} button can be used to automatically escape all back-slashes in both {{field|Extended Replace|Find what}} and  {{field|Extended Replace|Replace with}} edit fields.

{{button|Extended Replace|UnEscape \}} button can be used to remove all escapes from both {{field|Extended Replace|Find what}} and  {{field|Extended Replace|Replace with}} edit fields.

Note: Newlines and Tab characters can be used in {{field|Extended Replace|Find what}} and {{field|Extended Replace|Replace with}} fields freely. Moreover, each newline from the {{field|Extended Replace|Find what}} field matches any kind of newline in the document (Win/Unix/Mac). Each newline from the {{field|Extended Replace|Replace with}} field is converted to the current newline type (as shown in the {{feature|Status Bar}} for example) upon replacing.

Note: This tool is prefered to the standard {{button|Find Bar|Replace All}} mechanism from the {{feature|Find Bar}} in many cases. Its search is done in more feasible way and the replacing routine works much faster and uses less resources. Furthermore, the selection ensures, that the replacing is done only in the desired part of the text. And finally, one {{feature|Undo}} step covers all replacements together, instead of grouping many small separate replacements. Although this may not be directly apparent, it is incomparably better to have one big {{feature|Undo}} step instead of too many small {{feature|Undo}} steps. On the other hand, if you expect only a handful of matches and replacements in a big big document, the old good looping {{button|Find Bar|Replace All}} routine might come more handy.

{{#headline:Text tools|Enclose Selection.. (Alt+Ctrl+E)}}

Asks for two phrases and then encloses the selection with them. The first one ({{field|Enclose Selection|Before}}) is placed before the selection, the second one ({{field|Enclose Selection|After}}) is placed after the selection.

If there is nothing selected while using this tool, then the caret is placed between the two inserted strings.

{{example_start}}Example:
{{example_body}}TED Notepad for Windows is a {{example_select|freeware}} text editor, ...
{{example_end}}

{{example_start}}Result, using {{field|Enclose Selection|Before}}: {{string|<nowiki><b></nowiki>}} and {{field|Enclose Selection|After}}: {{string|<nowiki></b></nowiki>}}:
{{example_body}}TED Notepad for Windows is a <b>freeware</b> text editor, ...
{{example_end}}

{{tip}} This tool is most suitable for repeating phrases where only some part of those phrases varies and this variance occurs somewhere in the middle of them. Every time you need to use such phrase, either invoke this tool on empty selection and then type the varying part right in, or type the varying part first and then select it and enclose it. Remember: If there is nothing selected while using this tool, then the caret is placed between the two inserted strings.

{{tip}} If you need to enclose with XML or HTML tags, use the {{feature|XML/HTML Tag}} tool instead.

{{tip}} If you need to enclose entire subsequent lines, it is better to select all of them at once and use {{feature|Quote Lines}} tool (hotkey {{hotkey|Alt+Ctrl+Q}}) and then {{feature|Close Lines}} tool (hotkey {{hotkey|Alt+Ctrl+C}}) instead of selecting each one of them separately and performing the {{feature|Enclose Selection}} again and again.
