Basics

The Tab Size specifies the size of each tab stop. These tab stops determine, how much a Tab character shifts following text. Note: Tab characters unlike spaces are variable-length characters. They use pre-calculated tab stops to determine length of each Tab instance.

The Left Margin specifies the size of the left selection margin. The selection margin is a space between the text of the document and left border of the main window. Here users can drag mouse cursor to select entire lines quickly. Set Left Margin to zero to hide the selection margin completely.

Options

The Disable smart Home key disables smart behavior of the Home key. Smart behavior includes jumping between line's indentation and its beginning, or wrapped line beginning and unwrapped line beginning. See chapter Hotkeys for more details.

The Disable Overwrite mode disables the Overwrite Mode altogether and prevents invoking it accidentaly.

The Bold Caret in Overwrite mode visualy enlarges the caret while in Overwrite Mode. If disabled, Overwrite Mode can be still be determined from indicator in the Status Bar.

The Suppress multi-level Undo/Redo disables multi-level Undo/Redo altogether and imitates the old Windows Notepad's Undo command. Note: Windows Notepad's single-level Undo is always available thru Simple Undo hotkey Alt+BkSpace, even if multi-level Undo/Redo is enabled. Therefore, it may be more convenient to keep the multi-level Undo/Redo enabled and use Simple Undo hotkey Alt+BkSpace to get the old Windows Notepad's behaviour.

The Reduce Undo/Redo upon Save tells to reduce the multi-level Undo/Redo queues to a single Undo step. The Redo queue is emptied completely, the Undo queue is allowed to retain one step (the last one).

Note: By default, all Undo steps are kept for the duration of a document, i.e. until another document is loaded or the current document is at least re-loaded. This might have severe influence on available memory after too many modifications to the document (e.g. if one keeps some document opened for days and makes lots of modifications daily, the Undo queue can become quite big and superfluous, assuming no-one wants to Undo entire days of work anyway).

Note: Revert is a handy command to get rid of Undo queue besides Reduce Undo/Redo upon Save setting.

The Allow inserting control characters allows users to insert special control characters (several ASCII characters below 32) into the document. Inserting these characters is by default forbidden in order to prevent inexperienced users to add these characters thru unassigned hotkeys.

Mouse multi-clicks gradually select:

The Mouse multi-clicks gradually select set of options allow to specify, which text entities are to be selectable as whole pieces by mouse multi-clicks. Note: A multi-click is a double-click, triple-click, quadruple-click, etc.

Each further click advances to the next type of text entity in the following list (naturally, only those actually checked in this list count). After multi-clicking, hold down the mouse button and drag thru text to select by whole text pieces according to currently chosen text entity.

Example: Selecting thru double-click selects by entire words, if Mouse multi-clicks gradually select: Word is checked; triple-click selects by entire lines if Mouse multi-clicks gradually select: Wrapped line part is not checked and Mouse multi-clicks gradually select: Whole line is checked; and quadruple-click selects entire paragraphs if Mouse multi-clicks gradually select: Paragraph is checked. If Mouse multi-clicks gradually select: Wrapped line part is enabled triple-click selects wrapped line parts and entire lines can be selected by quadruple-click.

Complete Word

The Complete Word: Ignore case tells to ignore case upon populating the Complete Word dialog in Complete Word. See Complete Word for further details.

The Complete Word: Longest auto-completion enables the longest auto-completion in Complete Word. See Complete Word for further details.

The Complete Word: Sort suggestions sorts suggestions in the Complete Word dialog in Complete Word. See Complete Word for further details.

Indentation

The Auto-indent text specifies, whether auto-indent mode is to be used. If turned on, each time a new line is started (using Enter key), Smart Return (hotkey Ctrl+Enter) is used instead. Note: Smart Return starts a new line as usual, but also copies indentation from the previous line to the new line. See Smart Return for further details.

The Tab key indents multiple lines allows the user to use Tab key to Indent multiple lines instead of replacing them by a Tab character. If turned off, Tab key simply inserts one Tab character (or Spaces, if Insert Spaces instead of Tab is turned on), replacing anything selected. This is the same as if any other character was inserted, e.g. a letter. On the other hand, if turned on, instead of replacing, Indent is invoked if multiple lines are selected and Tab key is hit. Note: If single line or line part is selected (i.e. the selection does not contain any newline), it gets replaced even if Tab key indents multiple lines is turned on.

The Insert Spaces instead of Tab specifies whether to use Tab character when Tab key is pressed, or rather to use Spaces instead. Note: The number of Spaces inserted depends on the position on line and on the Tab Size setting.

Note: While using fixed-width font, the resulting visual blank space of inserted Spaces should be the same, as if a Tab character was inserted. This, however, does not always work with proportional fonts. In proportional fonts, size of a Space character often differ from font's base character width, from which tab stops are calculated. Therefore, there might be difference between real Tab size and accumulated size of Spaces inserted instead of a Tab. This option is however primarily meant for fixed-width fonts, and thus any potential difference while using proportional font is not considered wrong.

Keep caret from borders

The Keep caret from borders: Top/bottom ensures there is always some space between the caret and window borders. Scrolling is used early to keep this visual space, allowing the user to always see what is below or above the caret.

The Keep caret from borders: Left/right ensures there is always some space between the caret and window borders. Scrolling is used early to keep this visual space, allowing the user to always see what is before or after the caret.
